Seven-color Giant Maple, Omine Plateau

A tree that was once cut to a stump, spreading its branches again at the plateau gate.

The Omine Plateau in Ikeda sits at about 1,000 meters, with a gentle ridgeline running north to south. At its entrance stands the Seven-color Giant Maple, which was left as nothing but a stump right after the war and sprouted back into the tree you see today. It is more than 250 years old.

It is about 40 minutes by car from Azumino IC on the Nagano Expressway. In the usual peak window, mid-October to early November, green, yellow, orange and red leaves mix on the one tree, turning a uniform crimson after early November. A fence protects the roots, so stay outside it, and drones are not allowed. A donation box set out in peak season funds upkeep and checkups by a tree doctor.

The plateau also has a white birch forest and a campground. The area around the maple and the birch forest was certified by the Ministry of the Environment as a nature-coexistence site in fiscal 2024, recognized as a home to rare grassland plants and animals.
