Hunter Mountain Shiobara Autumn Foliage Gondola

The highest point of the Nichien Momiji Line sits at about 1,271 m. Stop at Hunter Mountain Shiobara along the way and a six-seat gondola carries you 2,400 m in about 10 minutes to a 1,618 m summit, roughly 350 m higher than the road itself.

Hunter Mountain Shiobara opened in 1988. It is a ski area in winter and also hosts a lily park; in autumn its gondola runs as a foliage ride through Nov 8, from 9:00 with the last ride up at 15:00 and the last ride down at 15:30. At the top, the Big Apple and Top of Hunter restaurants stay open until 15:00.

On the Momiji Line, the Nikko tourism association reported on Oct 18 that the summit area was at peak, the middle slopes were starting to turn, and the lower slopes were still green. By car it is about 29 km from Nishi-Nasuno-Shiobara IC via Route 400 through Shiobara Onsen, or about 38 km from Imaichi IC via Route 121.
