Mt. Akagi mountain road and Lake Onuma foliage

A volcano's bowl holding a lake, a marsh and an island shrine reached by a bridge.

Closed since February 2019, the Kitsutsuki Bridge on Lake Onuma reopened on Dec 16, 2025, after being rebuilt—72 meters long with wooden railings. It replaces the bridge the prefecture built in 1970, when Akagi Shrine moved to Kotorigashima.

From Maebashi IC it's about an hour by car. At the top you enter a caldera roughly 4 km north to south, formed 50,000 to 70,000 years ago. Onuma covers about 800,000 square meters, and the lakeshore loop takes around an hour and a half. The prefectural tourism association notes rowan and Japanese oak reflected in the water.

Southeast of the lake, Kakuman-buchi sits at 1,360 meters: a pond about 500 meters around, ringed by marsh whose grasses turn gold in autumn. Its name is said to come from the monk Kakuman, who held a seven-day, seven-night ceremony here in the fifth century. Return toward Maebashi, or descend to Akagi Onsen on the Ogo–Akagi road (closed from Dec 15).
