Autumn leaves at Teraha Gorge (Route 63)
A mountain road along the Yunokoya River, past eleven falls a poet named.
Every waterfall in Teraha Gorge has a name: Senryu, Iwana, Hakuryu, Yamabiko, Hisui, Kodama, Tsuzumi, Fudan, Shigure, Konomi and Higurashi. The haiku poet Mizuhara Shuoshi gave all eleven their names, and they are spread over roughly 5 km of the Yunokoya River.
Start from Minakami IC on the Kan-etsu Expressway, follow Route 291 and turn right at the Oana signal onto Prefectural Route 63. The gorge has no parking lot and no sidewalk, so this is a place to watch the falls go by from the car. Large buses cannot pass through, and toilets are at the Okutone Suigen no Mori campground (those at Naramata Dam are closed for construction). Yunokoya Onsen nearby carries a legend of Oshu Fujiwara refugees. The tourist office reported the gorge "at peak" on Oct 13.
Beyond the gorge the road climbs over the mountains and down to Tokura in Katashina; the 17.7 km from Yunokoya Bridge to Tsunagi Bridge is the stretch that closes each winter.
