Fujisan Skyline (autumn color before the winter closure)
Drive all the way to the 5th Station, billed as Japan's highest point reachable by private car.
Formally the Omote-Fuji Shuyu Road, it climbs, says the Fujinomiya tourism association, to the Fujinomiya 5th Station at about 2,400 meters, Japan's highest point reachable by private car.
Start at Mizugatsuka Park, 1,450 meters up and about 30 minutes from Susono IC. From here, the Ministry of the Environment's Numazu ranger office notes, the Hoei crater and Mt. Hoei are the landmarks of Fuji's south face. The climbing section passes knotweed, rowan and larch around the 5th Station, usually at peak Oct 4–20, and ends at a 350-car lot, where the Fujinomiya climbing trail begins, described as looking down on Suruga Bay.
Coming down, head west on the loop section past Nishi-Usuzuka parking, a foliage spot per the association, toward Fujinomiya. Larch, lacquer trees and maples along the Skyline usually peak Oct 20–25 (no year given). The climb closes for winter once snow or ice comes, on no fixed date, and in heavy rain.
