Cosmos at Hamanako Garden Park

Here a picture drawn in flowers is read from a 50-meter observation tower. The 2004 Hamanako Flower Expo grounds became this 56-hectare prefectural park, about 20 minutes from Kanzanji Smart IC, or 25 via the toll Hamayu Bridge from Hamamatsu-Nishi IC. Some 1,800 spaces; entry and parking are free.

The Flower Plaza holds about 400,000 cosmos on 3,000 square meters, mostly pink with red and white. The reds are planted as part of that picture, which shows from the tower (paid entry) along with the view across Lake Hamana. On Oct 18 the park called the bloom just reaching peak, the reds already there.

To finish, ride the boat along the east-west canal to the Flower Museum, built for the expo as a recreation of Monet's Giverny garden, with a water-lily pond and an arched bridge under wisteria. Boats run daily in October; last from the east pier at 16:40.
