Anest Iwata Turnpike Hakone and the Mt. Taikan Viewpoint
Climb from Odawara and the ridge ends at a view of Mt. Fuji across Lake Ashi.
The road is 9 m wide, and no curve is tighter than a 100 m radius. The Kanagawa tourism association notes that is about 2 m wider than a typical road and twice as gentle as a typical mountain curve (50 m radius). It runs along a ridge, and because it climbs so much, cherry blossoms and hydrangeas along the way bloom in stages.
The best direction is uphill from Odawara. The 13.8 km main line ends at Mt. Taikan (1,011 m), where the Sky Lounge looks across Lake Ashi to Mt. Fuji and, on the other side, over Sagami Bay to the Izu Islands and the Boso Peninsula. The painter Yokoyama Taikan is said to have loved painting Fuji from here. Upstairs is a tea lounge with about 60 seats; downstairs are soba and curry counters and souvenirs.
It is open 5:30–22:30 (last entry 22:00); the toll is ¥900 for a standard car and ¥650 for motorcycles over 125 cc.
