Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Fields (Hakone)
Turn toward Moto-Hakone at the Sengokuhara intersection on Route 138 and you arrive at the grass-covered slope.
This grassland stays a grassland because it is burned every year. The Hakone Tourist Association says that when burning stopped in 1970 the field filled with scrub, and the burn resumed in 1989, restoring the old landscape. In 2026, weather pushed the burn from March 3 to April 8; it began on the Daigatake side, then the wetland.
Come along Route 138 from Miyanoshita, or from Gotemba IC on the Tomei Expressway. At the Sengokuhara intersection, turn toward Moto-Hakone and follow the road until the slopes of Mt. Daigatake appear covered in grass. The town notes several parking lots nearby; from the one by the Sengokuhara water treatment center it is about a 10-minute walk.
A straight path of about 700 m runs through the field between tall grass. The Kanagawa tourism association gives late September to early November as the best time; as the plumes open, the field shifts from silver to gold. It is one of Kanagawa's 50 Scenic Spots and 100 Famous Flower Spots.
